Chocolate Scones

Desserts

Description

Rich, chocolatey scones with a soft, tender center and slightly crisp edges, packed with melty chocolate chips in every bite. They’re cozy and indulgent without being overly sweet, making them perfect for breakfast, an afternoon treat, or a little something special with a cup of coffee or tea.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp fine sea salt
  • ½ cup cold, cubed butter
  • ¾ cup chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ¾ cup milk, plus more if needed

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the cold cubed butter and gently rub it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, leaving some small pieces of butter intact.
  4. Stir in the brown sugar and chocolate chips.
  5. Add the vanilla extract and ¾ cup milk, gently folding until a soft dough forms. Add a little more milk if the dough is too dry.
  6. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and gently shape it into a ball. Avoid overworking the dough.
  7. Press the dough into a disc about 1 inch thick and cut it into 8 wedges.
  8. Place the wedges on the prepared baking tray, leaving some space between them.
  9. Bake for 18–23 minutes, or until the scones have risen and are cooked through.
  10. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool slightly.
  11. Drizzle with melted chocolate before serving, or enjoy warm with vanilla ice cream.
